Although it will be a tough job, I m up for a challenge. I want to help children, to live a long happy life. I want to pursue a career in Social Working. Negative things about Social Working are long hours, irregular schedule, higher degree necessary, compassion fatigue, and dangerous work. Then a Jamaican security guard came up to us and said, † What are you doing†, and I because I didn’t want to get in trouble said in a very angry and serious voice, † Gav man, where the hell did you put my hat? , the security guard told Gav to get my hat from where he had hidden it; amongst the boxes of wine. He gave it to me and we were just about to get away without getting into too much trouble when Gav, being the stupid idiot that he is, made the mistake of bursting into a fit of laughter when the guard had just turned away; not when he was out of earshot but when he had just turned his back so the guard heard, turned around, called his colleague and literally and I emphasise the literally, threw us out of the store onto the pavement; where Gav and I proceeded to laugh our heads off. But perhaps the most prominent building in my area is the office complex; just around the corner from my house; down a side road; which runs past a Gospel church. In this complex there is about 6 or 7 cameras 2 of which overlook the gate going in. On a dark and quiet Saturday night if there is nothing else to do; what me and my mates like doing is trying to get into the complex without being spotted by the 20 or so security guards just inside the main entrance. One time I dared a boy called Adam to run in and touch the sign that is about 10 metres in front of the front door. There were about five of us including Adam; he ran past the gate, past the cameras, touched the sign, and ran back. By this time all of the guards were up out of their seats and sprinting out of the door; I was the last one to notice; Adam sprints by me screaming like a little girl and everyone is running, I hadn’t noticed what was happening and when I turned around from my hiding place about 15 metres from the gate; about four of the guards were coming through the gate, I stood up and started sprinting like a cheetah chasing a zebra. When I came to the fork I went right whilst everyone else had gone left down to Adam’s house, I heard one of guards say, â€Å"You lot go left while we go right, we’re going to get these kids†, I though, Christ their going to catch me; I wouldn’t have been so worried if they weren’t carrying holsters around which could have contained a gun. Just last Sunday she came out and starting having a go at us; but when we started confronting her about taking pictures of us she said she’d even take videos of us; we just said but that’s illegal, she said so is noise disturbance; then I said â€Å"but which one do you think is more serious†, at which she just walked off and I called after her â€Å"I thought so! â€Å". She wears quite trampy clothes and she probably only has one piece of clean clothing in her whole life. As I went down the stairs I could see them through the 12ft high windows searching for me jogging through the aisles so I started jogging across the large 6 lane road to my house. As I rounded the corner I saw them come out the main entrance, point towards me and start sprinting, so I just sprinted to my house and got through the front door in record time. As I said earlier I consider Earls Court like a little town; a little town with its own high street with every shop its own cinema and even its own arena and park. But with little towns there comes problems. On Thursday mornings there are piles of black bin bags waiting for the bin men to come and take them away; it smells about as bad as rotten fish and eggs put together. Central Sprinkler Company took action when they discovered that the O-ring sprinklers were degrading over time. According to their findings, the sprinkler heads could corrode or contaminants such as salt could affect the O-ring seals. Those factors could have caused the sprinkler heads not activate in the event of a fire. (CPSC, 2001) The labor and free parts replacement covered 37 million fire sprinklers with O-ring seals made from the mid-1970 until 2001. There were also 167,000 sprinkler heads also recalled made by Gem Sprinkler Company and Star Sprinkler Inc. This move by Tyco management was prompted for two serious reasons. The first reason for the recall was the quality of the product that was released by Tyco. After extensive research and testing, Central Sprinkler Company was fortunate to catch the defect in its own product. The second and probably the most motivating factor was the prospect of massive lawsuits stemming from a faulty O-ring. Had the fault been overlooked, many lives would have been put in danger. The sprinkler recall wasn’t the only recall the Tyco International was faced with; there was also recall on smoke detectors. On May 19, 2006, Tyco Fire Security in cooperation with the Consumer Product Safety Commission released a product safety recall on Tyco Fire Security Fire Detection Systems. It was estimated that the recall affected about 21,000 Fire Detection Systems throughout the United States. The fault fire detection systems very susceptible to reduced sensitivity to smoke in conditions of high humidity and high temperature. If this were to occur, the senor on the device could have delayed detecting the presence of smoke in the event of a fire. Tyco Fire Security contacted building owners and managers with these sensors and provided free software upgrades. Like the recall of the sprinkler O-rings, Tyco International management was forced to correct this potentially disastrous problem. Not only is this an issue of ethics, but also an issue of legality. By being proactive in the problem, many lives were saved, the company’s reputation was in tact, and no legal issues emerged. In 1992, Dennis Kozlowski became CEO of Tyco International and spearheaded an aggressive acquisition strategy that led to the acquiring multitude of companies. Over the decade Tyco International enjoyed a steady improve in earnings and Kozlowski was constantly ranked as one of highest paid CEO’s in the United States. In 2002, on the heels of talks about splitting up the company into four separate companies, Tyco International came under fire for illegal accounting practices. It was later discovered that there were millions of unauthorized payments made to CEO Dennis Kozlowski and other Tyco employees. Dennis Kozlowski resigned from the company shortly after the scandal, leaving shareholders and Tyco employees unsure of the company’s future. According to reports, 11 names among the 51 Tyco employees who, at Kozlowskis direction and without board approval, received $56 million in bonuses that in effect canceled out loans they had taken from the companys relocation program. It was also found that $50 million was paid to Kozlowski and former chief financial officer Mark Swartz. The company said Kozlowski misused $62 million of the companys coffers to purchase a $16. million apartment on Fifth Avenue in New York and $14 million for improvements and furnishings to the apartment. Some of the furnishings that lacked any legitimate business purpose included a $15,000 dog umbrella stand; a $17,100 traveling toilet box; a $6,000 shower curtain; a $2,200 gilt metal wastebasket; and $2,900 for coat hangers. Overall, between 1995 and 2002, Kozlowski only paid back $21. 7 million of the $62 million. (CBS, 2002) After appointing former Motorola COO Edward Breen to CEO, Tyco International filed two federal lawsuits against Kozlowski and a federal suit against Swartz. Kozlowski and Swartz were charged with enterprise corruption and grand larceny for allegedly stealing $170 million from the company and obtaining $430 million through the fraudulent sales of securities. Both were convicted of all but one count. In this case Tyco made right decision to prosecute anyone involved with this case. If the scandal would have been poorly handled, the financial repercussions would have been devastating. In 2003, Tyco adopted the Guide to Ethical Conduct in order to guide and advise employees as to correct procedures and warn of unethical practices and behavior. Kirchmaier and Grant (2005) believe that managers in these two countries are more concerned with growth of the business, an increase of the number of staff, and boosting the value of assets under their control than they are concerned with developing and finding ways to benefit their shareholders. Thus, it is easier to return this money to stakeholders than to be concerned with empire building. Additionally, Kirchmaier and Grant (2005) realized that state, or government ownership, has a negative effect on several performance measures. They attributed this to the impact of politicians on firms’ decision making. Consequently, the firm ends up performing negatively. This effect of institutional concentration was confirmed by Fazlzadeh, Hendi and Mahboubi (2011). The authors also suggested that firm performance can be enhanced by restricting the block mode of shareholding in the hands of the institutional owners. Instead, the researchers proposed that institutional entities should own shares separately to reduce their control mechanism and avoid conflicts with other firm stakeholders.  A study by Lee and Zhang (2007) in China revealed that the firm’s value is affected negatively if the nationally held shares are many compared to distributive shares. A similar negative effect is felt on the firm value if the quota rate of the institutional investor is high. On the contrary, increasing the shares in the hands of other shareholders affects the ROA positively, while suppressing the Tobin’s Q. According to a study conducted by Telebnia, Valipour, and Shafie (2008) about the link between the ownership of the business and its performance, Tobin’s Q is a significantly influenced by the structure and ownership of the firm. This positive effect is only experienced when considering state ownership, while it becomes insignificant when conside ring the role of the minor shareholders. The performance of family business was recorded as high in a study conducted by Daraghma and Alsinawi (2010) in Palestine. The findings were concurrent with those of Jensen and Meckling (1976), who established that financial performance is affected positively by family-owned structure of business. Methodology The study aims at understanding the link between the ownership of a company and its performance. The companies that will be analysed will all be listed in the KSE. A firm’s performance can be evaluated by determining the ROA and ROE. The study considered publicly owned companies, multinationals, family owned firms, and government owned companies, which formed the research variables. The study hypotheses were formulated as shown below: There is a crucial link between public ownership and the Kuwaiti listed companies’ firm performance. There is an important relationship between government ownership and the Kuwaiti listed com panies’ firm performance. There is a significant connection between international ownership and the Kuwaiti listed companies’ firm performance. There is a significant link between family ownership and the Kuwaiti listed companies’ firm performance. The firm’s performance was considered to be the dependent variable. Some control variables that had a direct effect on firm performance were also considered. They included the number of years the company has been in service (since its registration), until the year 2010 and the company’s capital market size. The sample that was used in the research was retrieved from the KSE list of 2010. Some of the companies were, however, left out due to zero or little net income. In addition, some of the companies were left out due to the lack of enough data. Therefore, out of the original 233 companies that are listed in KSE, only 157 were analysed. Data of the study The data of the study was gathered from the offic ial website of Kuwait stock market (www.kse.com), where the data was considered here for annual closed stock price for 2008, 2009 and 2010. This relationship was also confirmed in a study by Din and Javid (2012) on the Pakistani Capital Market. Family owned businesses tend to invest in other projects, for instance in the expansion of the business, instead of sharing the revenue among the owners. Firm performance is positively influenced by the fact that a firm is owned by the government. Quang and Xin (2014) confirm that a firm’s performance improves with an increase in the level of government structure, as established in Vietnamese firms. Public ownership has a positive effect on firm performance, where the effect on ROA and ROE is positive. Shareholders tend to hold the directors of such firms responsible and make them work towards the improvement of the interests of the shareholders (Rahman Reja, 2014). Foreign ownership also has a positive effect on firm performance. Modebadze (2011) found that there is a positive ROE, but a negative ROA, in banks that are foreign owned in Georgia, which implies that a firm’s performance is partly determined by the sector in which it operates. Foreign firms have better p erformance because they tend to be more cost efficient than local firms. Conclusion This study sought to determine the relationship between firm performance, as measured using return on equity and return on assets, and the type of business ownership in Kuwait Stock Market. The study established that a majority of the firms in Kuwait are owned by families, indicating that their performance is good. Publicly owned firms form the second largest share, while foreign owned firms make the least share of firms in the economy. Government owned firms had the third largest share. On measuring the performance of the firms using the four ownership variables, the study established that all the types of ownership examined have a positive effect on ROE and ROA, which indicates a positive effect on firm performance. However, the author is cautious in generalizing these findings, as the performance of the firms was not evaluated based on the sector each firm operates. It took David Lloyd-George, Prime Minister of Britain, Georges Clemenceau, Prime Minister of France, and Thomas Woodrow Wilson, president of the United States of America, six months to negotiate this peace treaty. I believe that the Treaty of Versailles was reasonable, mostly fair but sometimes unfair as well, as Germany had annexed parts of other countries and it was only fair to give those parts back to their original country, also Germany invaded Belgium, a neutral country, destroying it. However, it was unfair that Germans who lived in parts of Germany, such as Posen and near Danzig, were not allowed to be German or a part of Germany, while for example Poles who had been living in Germany before the Treaty of Versailles, now had their own country, Poland. According to the Treaty of Versailles, Germany had to lose 10 percent of its land and all of its colonies1. Germans did not like this; however, Germany had annexed Alsace- Lorraine, two rich industrial parts of France after the Franco- Prussian wars in 1870 and 1871, and in 1918 after Russia had signed the Treaty of Brest- Litovsk, Germany took 35 percent of Russias land together with most of its industry. Germans were now thinking that losing 10 percent was a lot, when before they had had no problem with forcing Russia to lose 35 percent of its land, especially most of its industrial land. The Treaty of Versailles now simply commanded Germany to return Alsace- Lorraine to France, the 35 percent of Russia was partly given back to Russia but was also use to form new countries, Schleswig was given to Denmark, West Prussia, Posen and Upper Silesia were given to Poland2 just to name a few. Article 116 of the Treaty of Versailles states: Germany acknowledges and agrees to respect as permanent and inalienable the independence of all the territories which were part of the former Russian Empire on August 1st, 1914. 3 And article 51 says that: The territories which were ceded to Germany in accordance with the Preliminaries of Peace signed at Versailles on February 26, 1871, and the Treaty of Frankfurt of May 10, 1871, are restored to French sovereignty as from the date of the Armistice of November 11, 1918. The provisions of the Treaties establishing the delimitation of the frontiers before 1871 shall be restored. 4 These article states that Germany shall respect the parts of th e former Russian Empire, which it annexed, now to be free and no longer a part of Germany. The second article states that Alsace- Lorraine shall be returned to France, and that the German and French boundary is to be just like it was before the Franco- Prussia wars. Also articles such as, 83, 87 and 1095 command Germany to give land to Poland, Czechoslovakia and Denmark and establish the new German boarders. On August 4th, 1914 Germany invaded Belgium, which up till then had been a neutral country just like the Netherlands. With this act Germany broke article seven of the 1839 Treaty of London, which stated that: Belgium, within the limits specified in Articles I, II, and IV, shall form an independent and perpetually neutral State. It shall be bound to observe such neutrality towards all other States. 6 However, the German army went through Belgium plundering and terrorizing- they shot civilians, burned down towns, raped women and children7, while trying to full fill the Schlieffen Plan. The German army did not only do this to Belgium, but to all other countries they invaded, but Belgium is simply one of the most known as it marked the begin of World War One. As a result it is quite fair that Germany had to pay 132 billion German marks8 for the reparations of World War One, after they went through a country destroying it and its people, invaded other countries such as Russia and France, doing the same there. However, you can also look from the other side, Germany didnt only have to pay for the damage it made, but also for the damage the British, the French, the Russians, the Americans and everyone else who fought in the war made. But Germany was one of the strongest, on of the richest country and the USA, Britain and France could not let Germany stay too powerful. I still believe that this was not too harsh on Germany, as Germany caused a lot of damage and started the war, and now had to pay. One of Woodrow Wilsons fourteen points was self- determination. This meant that he wanted every nationality to be able to rule themselves, in their own country9. As a fact, this point was incorporated in the Treaty of Versailles leading to the creation of Czechoslovakia and Yugoslavia and to the recreation Poland. Czechoslovakia was mostly made up of mostly Czechs (seven million) and Slovaks (two million). However, there were also seven hundred thousand Hungarians, four hundred fifty thousand Ukrainians and three and a half million Germans living in Czechoslovakia10. Yugoslavia was mostly made up of Serbs, Macedonians, Croats, Slovenes and Bosnians11. Poland was recreated but around thirty percent of its population was not Polish, but Russian or German or Jewish,12 to name some. Due to the Treaty these Poles, Czechs, Slovaks, Serbs, Bosnians, Croats, Macedonians and Slovenes, all got their own country, which they could rule. This was self- determination. However, the Germans living in Czechoslovakia were not allowed to be German and they were not allowed to live in their own country and be ruled by Germans. These Germans had to be Czechoslovakian, which a majority of the Germans did not want to be as many wanted to live inside Germany. The same thing happened with Poland and the Polish Corridor. The Germans living near Danzig, in the Polish Corridor, now no longer were German but Polish instead. This was basically against Woodrow Wilsons point of Self- determination, as these Germans were not allowed to live in their own country and to be their own nationality. Therefore I believe that the Treaty of Versailles was mostly fair but also a bit unfair, due to the fact that Germany had annexed parts of, for example France and Russia and it was nothing but fair, that Germany had to return this land. Also Germany started World War One or at least the actual fighting, by invading the neutral state of Belgium, demolishing it. And lastly, and the reason why I believe that the Treaty of Versailles was a bit unfair, because Germans living in parts of Germany that were given to another country, were not allowed to rule themselves, or to live in their own country going against the point of self- determination in the Treaty of Versailles. I suppose the writer chose â€Å"took off† because he’d already used left in â€Å"left behind.† By replacing â€Å"left behind† with abandoned, he could have used left instead of took off to mean depart. The three burglary suspects were believed to be holed up in someone’s house. The expression â€Å"to hole up† or â€Å"to be holed up† is definitely slang. Conventional usage: â€Å"were believed to be hiding in someone’s house.† Snipers in camouflage climbed on roof tops and officers made sure every inch of the neighborhood was covered, from backyards, to front porches, dogs hunted for the suspects scent. i. The word rooftops is a closed compound. ii. A comma usually separates independent clauses joined by and: â€Å"Snipers in camouflage climbed on rooftops, and officers made sure† iii. The sentence is actually two sentences, incorrectly joined by a comma splice. The first sentence should end with â€Å"from backyards to front porches.† The next sentence is â€Å"Dogs hunted for the suspects’ scent.† iv. The dog sentence is less than satisfying. Did the dogs really hunt the scent? Or were they following the scent as they hunted the suspects? Police are praising the woman at the start of the day who called police when she heard the burglars inside her home. This is an example of a misplaced modifier. The hunt for the burglars began when the woman phoned the police that morning. Better: â€Å"Police are praising the woman who called police at the start of the day when she heard the burglars inside her home.† Shortly after writing this post, I heard about the availability of software applications designed to write articles with a minimum of human input. Free trade and a large capital and human resource have contributed to most of the economic developments in China. Industries in these regions range from electronic companies to designer clothing firms. They provide job to locals leading to middle and upper class lifestyles. China’s high population has been advantageous in the provision of local markets (China Central Television 2014). Most of the produced goods are sold locally while the national government invests in exports as a source of income. Reliance on internal sources of raw materials has also enhanced the country’s economic stability because economic meltdowns in other countries do not cause a chain reaction.
